“Images of America :Royalton, Middleport and Hartland,” a book by local author Frederick G. Fierch is a nostalgic collection of photographs and descriptions of local homes, businesses and historical places and people in the Eastern end of Niagara County.   The book will be on sale on Monday April 19, 2010 and it will be available in area bookstores, online or independent retailers. The Erie Canal, featured in many of the photos is a common thread throughout the book.

Starting with a foreword by Middleport Mayor Julia Maedl the book describes various locations in the Village of Middleport and towns of Royalton and Hartland. Some structures and business from the past are shown along with former residents make the book an enjoyable way to go back in time. You’ll learn where the Johnson Creek hamlet was established.  Photographs of the Middleport Fire Department are included in the various parades through the years that continued in the Village to this very day. I was happy to see that the author included a glimpse of  historical family life, work life, places of worship, the Erie canal history and former businesses with an equal amount of care.

Each town, village and the hamlet of Gasport are given a section, photos carefully selected to showcase the history, former schools and hotels and churches from the surrounding areas. The book is not all photographs of older buildings and farms that stood in the 1800’s. There is a rich history that reaches beyond the farming and detailed architecture of residential homes.   In this book Fierch features photographs of Belva Lockwood, the first woman candidate for President. She was born on Griswold St in the town of Royalton and became one of the first female attorneys to practice before the Supreme Court.

Readers will learn that John Warren Hull, who has two stars on the Hollywood walk of fame for radio and television  was born in Gasport NY. His musical interest began at the Friend’s Church in Gasport. He was a talented actor, singer and hosted a show called Strike it Rich.

Diners at Darrell’s Place will know they are having a meal at the former Green Kettle on Route 31. If you have a love of Middleport, Gasport and Royalton and Hartland you will find yourself drawn into some of the photographs, or former local high school teams or athletes that grew up in the area. Every aspect of small town living, manufacturing and farming are included. The photos are from public and private collections and show the Canal, cold storage for various fruit farming and chemical spray industries.

Frederick G. Fierch, a lifelong resident of Middleport and the Town of Royalton has also published ‘1916 Ireland’s Easter Rising’, published by Heritage Books.  He and his wife have owned and operated their own business in Middleport since 1983 and he is a retired Social Studies Teacher.

UPDATE: Meet Fred Fierch on May 8th at the Bookshoppe in Medina where he will be doing a book signing. His books are available at Bookshoppe and he will sign from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
