Saturday is the day for the last big celebration of Middleport’s sesquicentennial year. The Middleport Sesquicentennial Committee invites everyone to join to celebrate the village’s 150th birthday. Park Avenue, between Vernon and Main Streets, will be closed off from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. so there can be “dancin’ in the street” to the sounds of the Easy Street Big Band. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy complimentary hotdogs, soft drinks, and desserts. The rain location will be the Scout House on Telegraph Road.
Local residents have been invited to set up displays showcasing their Middleport memorabilia collections. If you have something you’d like on display, please call the Village Hall. This event is free to all. Plan to attend and wondering what to wear? Take a peek in your attic. Make it a real celebration and come in clothing from days gone by!
The committee will continue the “wooden nickel” contest and the public is invited to guess how many wooden nickels are in a jar. These nickels are left from the Village’s
Centennial celebrations in 1959 and were generously donated by two village residents Tom Sheldon and Margaret Droman. The person who guesses closest to the number without going over will win a sesquicentennial t-shirt, mug, and calendar. The winner will be announced during the dance, so hurry and make your guess. Remember, when you make your guess, you get to keep the commemorative pen. The jar is on display at the village hall to try your luck.
You can still purchase commemorative mugs and t-shirts with the Village of Middleport’s newly created crest and calendars chock full of photos and historical tidbits from Middleport’s past. Calendars and t-shirts are $7 each and mugs are $5. These items are also available at the village hall. Call 735-3303 for more information.
